Viju Khote, an iconic figure in the Hindi and Marathi film industry, passed away on 30th September 2019, Monday. The reason for his demise is multiple organ failure. The veteran actor, Viju Khote, was 77.
His niece, actress Bhavana Balsavar, informed PTI that the actor peacefully passed away in his sleep, at his residence, at 6.55 in the morning. The veteran actor had been unwell for quite some time and suffered from multiple organ failure. Khote refused to breathe his last breath in the hospital. Therefore, the family shifted him back home a few days ago before his demise. The last rites of the veteran actor have been performed around 11 am at Chandan Wadi.
The veteran actor, Viju Khote has played the iconic role of Kaaliya, in the movie ‘Sholay’ in which he played the hilarious sidekick of dacoit Gabbar Singh. One of the most iconic dialogues of all time, etched in the history of Hindi cinema, “Kitne Aadmi The?”, “Do, Sarkar” and “Sardar maine aapka namak khaya hai” was delivered by him.
Khote’s character Robert in the movie Andaz Apna Apna produced one of the most replicated dialogues, “Galti se mistake hogaya”. The actor was also a known comedian in the television industry and will be reminisced for his role as Vittal Bapurao Pote in Zabaan Sambhalke, a popular 90s sitcom. He portrayed the role of a Maharashtrian Nautanki actor, who would often come to class in his funny play costumes.
Viju worked in more than 300 movies, had a career spanning for over six decades. His other most memorable roles include Maan Singh in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Mac & Sam’s boss in Garam Masala, Shambu Kaka in Golmaal 3, Shirish Appain in Ventilator.
Apart from movies veteran actor Viju Khote also acted in a web series Jeeney Bhi Do Yaaron, in which he portrayed the character of Ganpat Sharma (Dadaji) released in 2017. The last performance given by him was in the movie Jaane Kyun De Yaaron released in 2018, in which he played the character of Biju Khote.
The actor was also a prominent personality in the Marathi theatre and has acted in several plays spanning across his career.
Viju Khote born as Vittal Bapurao Khote on 17th December 1941 is the younger brother of actress Shubha Khote. His aunt Durga Khote and niece Bhavana Balsavar are also famous personalities in Indian cinema. Viju’s father, Nandu Khote, was also an acclaimed stage actor.
The Indian film industry took to Twitter to express their shock and condolences for the passing away of the veteran actor. Famous personalities like Tisca Chopra, Esha Gupta, Suniel Shetty, Rishi Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Indian filmmaker and social activist Ashoke Pandit expressed their sorrow on the sad demise. A lot of gratitude also shown by the Twitter universe and the other social media platforms for the actor’s contribution to the Indian Film Industry.
Viju Khote was undoubtedly one of the finest performers and a gem of a personality. His aura and charm will be remembered for time immemorial. He brought uniqueness and life to each of his characters; however small they may be. His persona as an actor and his timing of comedy was commendable. Khote has created a niche for himself in the film industry, which cannot be replaced by anyone. Viju’s sad demise has created a void in the hearts of many, which cannot be filled. Viju Khote was indeed a veteran, and an inspiration to many and his legacy will be carried forward through his movies, which will live forever in the hearts of the people.
